In October of 1864 a troop of Confederate cavalry infiltrated St Albans, Vermont: twelve miles south of Canada, six hundred miles north of the the Civil War battle lines.
With noise and fire they declared the town in the possession of the Confederacy, adding, "We have come to give you Yankees a taste of General Sherman's idea of war."
What followed was both tragic and comic as the Rebels raided and the Green Mountain Boys resisted.
Rebel Gray, Mountain Green by Peter McKenna is a fact based, illustrated account of this singular incident and of the dramatic wartime career of the Rebel leader: Lieutenant Bennett Young. It is also a look at how individual citizens faced a sudden and violent crisis - perhaps with lessons for our time.
